By the spring of Year 6, most families have settled into a rhythm of SATs preparation: a booklet of arithmetic questions, a reasoning paper at the weekend, and a steadily growing pile of marked work. It feels productive. Quite often it is. But if your child is getting the arithmetic paper right and then losing marks on reasoning, more of the same will not close the gap — because the two papers are not testing the same thing.
Understanding that distinction is the most useful thing a parent can do in the months before May.
What the Year 6 maths SATs actually measure
There are three papers. Paper 1 is arithmetic: thirty minutes of calculation, no context, no reading. Papers 2 and 3 are reasoning, and they are where most marks are won and lost. A reasoning question wraps the arithmetic inside a situation, and your child has to work out what sum to do before they can do it.
That first step — turning a paragraph of English into a calculation — is a genuinely separate skill. A child can be fluent at long division and still not recognise that a question about sharing costs between four families is a division question. The arithmetic was never the obstacle.
This is why the pile of marked arithmetic booklets can be misleading. It measures the part your child may already be able to do.
Where the Singapore approach helps most
Singapore maths is often described in terms of its resources, but the substance of it is a sequence: children meet an idea concretely, then pictorially, then abstractly. The pictorial stage is the one that matters most for SATs reasoning, because it gives a child a way of thinking on paper when the answer is not immediately visible.
When a Year 6 pupil meets a multi-step problem about a quantity being shared unequally, they have two options. They can hunt for the right procedure and hope. Or they can draw the relationship, look at the drawing, and read the calculation off it. The second route is slower to learn and far more reliable under pressure, because it does not depend on having seen that exact question type before.

The topics that repay depth
Not everything on the Year 6 curriculum carries equal weight in the reasoning papers. Three areas repay real attention:
Fractions, decimals and percentages as one idea
Children who hold these as three separate topics are doing three times the work. Children who see them as three notations for the same relationship can move between them freely, and reasoning questions frequently require exactly that movement.
Ratio and proportion
This is where the hardest reasoning marks tend to sit, and where a visual representation does the most work. A ratio question that looks impenetrable in words is often obvious once drawn.
Multi-step problems with a hidden stage
The questions that cost the most marks are the ones where finding the answer requires first finding something the question never mentions. Practising these deliberately — and talking through what the missing step was — is worth more than a dozen routine questions.
Preparing without turning maths into a chore
There is a version of SATs preparation that produces a child who is competent and thoroughly tired of maths by July. Since Year 6 leads directly into secondary school, that is an expensive trade.
A few things help. Keep sessions short and frequent rather than long and occasional; twenty focused minutes beats a strained hour. Mark reasoning work together rather than handing it back, and spend the time on how your child read the question rather than whether they got it right. And when they are stuck, resist explaining immediately — the pause before understanding is where the learning happens.
It is also worth remembering what these papers are for. They inform secondary school setting and they matter to the school, but they are not a verdict on your child. Children who arrive in Year 7 believing they are capable of working something out do better over five years than children who arrive with a slightly higher scaled score and a fear of unfamiliar questions.
Looking past May
The best Year 6 preparation is preparation that is still useful in Year 7. Ratio, proportion and fraction fluency are the direct foundations of secondary algebra, and a child who understands them structurally walks into KS3 with real advantages — something we have written about in our piece on Singapore maths as a KS3 bridge.
That continuity is the argument for teaching for understanding rather than for the paper. Preparation aimed only at May is spent by June.
