The Senior Maths Challenge sits at an awkward point in the sixth-form year. It arrives in the autumn term, when Year 12 pupils are still finding their feet in A-level maths and Year 13 pupils are already thinking about applications. It is not examined, not required, and not on anyone’s scheme of work — and yet for a mathematically able student it is one of the more genuinely useful hours they will spend.
For parents, the question is usually a practical one: what does preparing for it actually involve, and can it be done sensibly online?
What the Senior Maths Challenge involves
The UK Senior Mathematical Challenge is open to students in Year 13 and below. It is a ninety-minute paper of twenty-five multiple-choice questions, and — this is the part that surprises people — the syllabus is essentially GCSE. There is no calculus, no formal proof, nothing that requires the A-level course to have been completed.
What makes it hard is not the content but the packaging. Familiar ideas are combined in unfamiliar ways, and a student who has learned A-level maths as a set of methods will find that none of the methods quite fit. Marks are deducted for incorrect answers in the second half of the paper, which rules out working through by guesswork.
Strong performance leads on to the Senior Kangaroo or the British Mathematical Olympiad. But the Challenge is worth sitting on its own terms, regardless of what follows.
Why it is worth the time in a busy sixth-form year
The honest case is not about the certificate. It is that A-level maths, taught to the specification, can be completed successfully by a student who never has to work anything out from first principles. The examinations are predictable, the question types recur, and diligent practice carries a long way.
That works until it does not. It stops working in the second year of A-level, where the questions become genuinely synoptic. It stops working at interview, and it stops working in the first term of a mathematical degree.
Challenge preparation is one of the few things that reliably builds the missing capability, because every question requires a decision about how to start. A student who has spent a term making those decisions approaches an unfamiliar A-level question differently — they attempt it.
It is also, for the right student, genuinely enjoyable. The problems are elegant, the solutions are often short, and the satisfaction of finding a neat route is a large part of why people study maths in the first place.
How to prepare well
Work on the problems, not around them
The temptation is to read solutions. Reading a solution to a problem you have not seriously attempted teaches almost nothing, because the difficult part was choosing the first move, and the written solution has already made that choice. A problem attempted for twenty minutes and then read about is worth ten problems read about directly.
Build a small repertoire of techniques
Most Senior Challenge questions yield to a fairly compact set of ideas: working backwards from the options, considering extreme or special cases, exploiting symmetry, counting the same thing two different ways, and simple invariance arguments. These are not on any syllabus, and they are learnable.
Practise the arithmetic of elimination
Because the paper is multiple choice under time pressure, being able to rule out three options quickly is often more valuable than solving cleanly. Estimation and sanity-checking are exam technique here, not shortcuts.
Do a little, often
Two or three problems a week from September is far more effective than a concentrated fortnight beforehand. Problem-solving improves slowly and does not respond well to cramming.
Why online suits this particularly well
Competition maths is one of the areas where online teaching is genuinely better than the alternative, rather than merely equivalent.
The reason is that the valuable thing to watch is a teacher’s thinking, not their handwriting. In an online classroom where the student has their own whiteboard, a teacher can see an attempt forming in real time and intervene at the moment the student takes a wrong turning — which is the moment that matters, and the one that is usually invisible in a classroom of thirty.
It also solves a supply problem. Teachers who are comfortable with olympiad-style problems are not evenly distributed around the country, and for most families the local option is whoever happens to be nearby. Online removes that constraint entirely.
How we teach it
UKMT Challenge and Olympiad preparation is something we have done for years and have had real success with. Our teaching is delivered by qualified teachers trained in the UK or Singapore, and the sessions are built around working problems live — including the false starts, which are the instructive part.
At sixth-form level this is one-to-one work. We do not run A-level groups: the students who want this are working at very different points, and pairing the teaching to the individual is the only way it makes sense. It sits naturally alongside A-level maths and science tuition, and in practice the two reinforce each other.

A sensible first step
Give your son or daughter a past paper over a weekend, with no timing and no marking, and ask them afterwards which question they found most interesting. The answer tells you a great deal — both about their mathematics and about whether this is something they would enjoy pursuing.
