Scholarship papers are not simply the entrance exam with a few more difficult questions attached. They are a different assessment with a different purpose, and preparing for one as though it were an extension of standard 11+ work is the most common mistake families make. Effective academic scholarship maths exam preparation starts with understanding what the paper is actually looking for.

An entrance paper asks whether a child can do the mathematics expected of their year group. A scholarship paper asks something else: whether a child can do mathematics they have not been taught.

How scholarship papers differ

Fewer questions, more marks each

Where an entrance paper might carry forty short questions, a scholarship paper often carries a dozen extended ones. Marks are awarded for method across several steps, which changes the arithmetic of the exam entirely. A single abandoned question costs far more, and partial credit becomes genuinely valuable.

Unfamiliar contexts by design

Scholarship questions routinely present a situation a candidate has not seen before and supply the rule needed to work with it. The mathematics required is usually within the standard syllabus; the demand is in reading an unfamiliar definition and applying it correctly. This is a distinct skill and it can be practised.

Multi-stage structure

Questions frequently build across parts, where part (a) establishes something that part (c) depends on. Candidates who treat each part as independent lose marks they had already earned the right to. Recognising the architecture of a long question is half of answering it.

Explanation carries marks

Scholarship papers ask candidates to justify, explain or prove far more often than entrance papers do. Writing “36” where the paper asked why is a lost mark even when the answer is correct. Children accustomed to answer-only formats find this the most jarring change.

Preparing for the unfamiliar

The obvious difficulty is that you cannot revise for content you have not been taught. What can be built instead is the disposition to approach an unfamiliar question methodically rather than abandon it.

The practical version of this is a habit: read the question twice, write down what is given, draw the situation, and identify what is being asked before attempting anything. Children who do this reliably will attempt questions they cannot immediately see through. Children who do not will skip them.

Drawing is the part most often left out and the part that does most work. A visual representation converts an unfamiliar problem into a structure the child can examine, and it makes the relationships between quantities explicit rather than held in the head. Content worth strengthening first

While the questions are unfamiliar, the mathematics they draw on is not unlimited. Scholarship papers return repeatedly to a small set of topics, generally handled more deeply than an entrance paper would.

  • Ratio and proportion — including sharing in unequal parts and problems where the ratio changes partway through.
  • Fractions and percentages combined — particularly reverse problems, where the result is given and the starting quantity is required.
  • Number properties — factors, multiples, primes and divisibility, used as tools within longer problems rather than tested directly.
  • Sequences and patterns — including finding and justifying a general rule, which is often a candidate’s first encounter with algebraic reasoning.
  • Area, perimeter and volume — usually as compound shapes requiring a decision about how to decompose them.

Timing and how to practise it

Scholarship timing works differently. With fewer, longer questions, a candidate cannot simply move quickly — they must decide how long a question is worth and commit to it. Two questions attempted thoroughly will usually outscore four attempted partially.

The most useful practice format is therefore not a full timed paper every week. It is a single extended question, worked without time pressure, with the child then explaining their reasoning aloud. Speed can be introduced once the method is reliable; introduced earlier it simply produces faster errors.

A realistic timescale

Scholarship preparation sits on top of secure year-group mathematics, not instead of it. A child still consolidating standard content is better served by finishing that work first — the extended questions become considerably more approachable once the foundations underneath them are automatic.

Where the foundations are already in place, six to nine months of regular work on extended problems is a reasonable expectation. That work is more challenging than standard preparation and it is also, for most children who enjoy mathematics, considerably more interesting. Scholarship questions are the first ones that feel like genuine problems rather than exercises.

Deciding whether to sit one

Not every strong mathematician should sit a scholarship paper, and the decision is worth making on the child’s appetite for unfamiliar problems rather than on their current attainment alone. A child who enjoys being stuck for a while is well suited to it. A child who finds that experience uncomfortable will have a difficult morning regardless of ability.
