Sixth form entrance has become a genuine admissions round in its own right. Schools that accept external candidates into Year 12 increasingly set their own papers, and for anyone intending to take maths or a maths-adjacent subject, the 16 plus sixth form entrance maths exam is usually the one that carries the most weight. It is also the one families know least about, because it sits in an awkward gap: too late to be covered by 11+ advice, too early to be A-Level preparation.

The paper is typically sat in the autumn or early spring of Year 11, months before GCSEs. That timing is the defining feature of it.

What these papers actually test

A 16+ maths paper assesses GCSE Higher content, sat by a candidate who has not finished the GCSE course. Schools know this, and paper design reflects it: questions concentrate on the material covered by the end of Year 10 and the first term of Year 11, examined to a standard closer to grades 7 to 9 than to the middle of the range.

In practice this means algebra, ratio and proportion, geometry and reasoning carry most of the paper. Later-taught topics — vectors, circle theorems, more advanced trigonometry — appear less often, precisely because candidates cannot be assumed to have met them.

Depth over coverage

Where a GCSE paper spreads across the full specification, a 16+ paper goes deeper into less. Multi-step algebra, problems requiring a decision about method, and questions carrying an explanation mark are all more heavily represented than they would be at GCSE.

Some papers include stretch material

A minority of schools include a section drawing on early A-Level thinking — not content, but the style of reasoning: proof, generalisation, working with an unfamiliar definition supplied in the question. Candidates are not expected to have met it. They are expected to engage with it sensibly.

The preparation problem

The difficulty is straightforward. A Year 11 candidate is being examined on a course they are part way through, at a standard above where their class currently sits, several months before their teachers intended them to reach it.

This is why generic GCSE revision is a poor fit. Revision assumes the material has been taught and needs consolidating. For 16+ preparation, part of the work is meeting content early — and meeting it properly rather than at the level of a memorised procedure, because the paper will ask for reasoning rather than recall.

Reasoning is the differentiator

Candidates rarely lose 16+ papers on content. They lose them on the questions where the method is not stated and must be chosen.

Visual representation is unusually effective here, and it is underused at this level because students associate it with primary work. Drawing the structure of a ratio problem or an algebraic relationship makes the route visible in a way that rearranging symbols does not, and it works exactly as well in Year 11 as in Year 6. Explanation is the other differentiator. Marks for justification are routinely dropped by candidates who reached the correct answer, simply because they were never asked to write the reasoning down. This is a habit, and it takes a few weeks to build.

A sensible timeline

Working back from an autumn Year 11 paper, a realistic schedule looks like this.

  • Spring of Year 10 — confirm which schools set papers and obtain past or specimen material. Formats vary considerably and there is no common standard.
  • Summer of Year 10 — bring forward the algebra and ratio content that will not otherwise be taught in time. This is the substantial piece of work.
  • Early Year 11 — extended reasoning questions and written justification, one or two questions at a time rather than full papers.
  • Four weeks out — timed papers in the target format, and interview preparation where the school includes one.

Work started later than this is still worthwhile, but it narrows to exam technique rather than genuine content preparation.

The wider benefit

One thing worth saying to a Year 11 who resents the extra work: none of it is wasted. Content brought forward for a 16+ paper is content that will be examined at GCSE a few months later, met earlier and understood more deeply. Candidates who prepare properly for sixth form entrance tend to arrive at their GCSEs in a stronger position than they would otherwise have been, whatever the admissions outcome.
