The Question

Three friends share a taxi fare of £45. Ali pays twice as much as Ben, and Ben pays £3 more than Cara. How much does each pay?

The Answer

Reveal the Answer
Cara £9, Ben £12, Ali £24

Start from Cara, because everything is defined in terms of her. Cara = c, Ben = c + 3, Ali = 2c + 6. Total 4c + 9 = 45, so c = 9. Choosing the right person to start from turns a hard question into an easy one.
