Four averages, and which one to trust
Finding the mean, median, mode and range of a data set, and deciding which one best represents it.
The Question
Seven pupils scored 12, 15, 9, 15, 20, 11 and 16. Find the mean, median, mode and range. Which average best describes the group, and why?
The Answer
Reveal the Answer
Order them first: 9, 11, 12, 15, 15, 16, 20. The mean is pulled down by the 9. Ask which number you would quote to a parent, and why — that is the actual skill being tested.
