Mock exam season produces a lot of numbers and not much clarity. A score comes back, sometimes a rank alongside it, and parents are left to work out what any of it means for the real thing. Understanding 11 plus mock exam results properly matters, because the score itself is rarely the useful part. The paper underneath it is.

A mock is a diagnostic instrument. Treated as one, it will tell you exactly where the next eight weeks of preparation should go. Treated as a verdict, it tells you almost nothing.

What a mock exam score is actually measuring

A mock measures performance on one particular paper, on one particular morning, against one particular cohort. Each of those three variables moves. A child who scores 62% on a demanding paper sat by a strong cohort may be better prepared than one who scores 78% on a gentle paper sat by a mixed group.

This is why raw percentages travel so badly between providers. Before drawing any conclusion, establish what the paper was: which format it followed, how long it allowed, and whether it was written to the standard of the schools you are actually targeting.

The three numbers worth reading

The raw score

The raw mark tells you how much of the paper your child completed correctly. On its own it is the least informative number, but it becomes useful when you also know how many questions went unattempted. Thirty marks lost across attempted questions is a different problem from thirty marks lost because the last page was never reached.

The standardised score

Standardisation adjusts for age and cohort, which is why it is the figure grammar schools actually use. If a provider supplies one, it is the number to track across successive mocks. A rising standardised score against a static raw score still represents genuine progress.

The rank or percentile

Rank matters only in proportion to how closely the mock cohort resembles the real applicant pool. A national online mock and a small local one produce very different rankings from identical performance. Read rank as a rough signal, never as a place in a queue.

Reading the paper, not the score

The genuinely valuable work happens with the marked script in front of you. Every lost mark falls into one of four categories, and each one calls for a different response.

  • Knowledge gaps — the topic has not been taught, or was taught and has faded. These are the quickest to close and the most satisfying to fix.
  • Method gaps — the topic is familiar, but the child has no reliable route through a multi-step version of it. This is where most 11+ marks are genuinely won and lost.
  • Timing losses — questions left blank, or rushed answers in the final section. A timing problem masquerading as a knowledge problem is the most commonly misdiagnosed pattern in mock analysis.
  • Transcription errors — the maths was right and the answer written down was not. Irritating, but genuinely straightforward to reduce.

Sort every dropped mark into those four buckets before deciding anything. The shape of that distribution is the actual result of the mock. A child losing eighteen marks to timing needs a completely different plan from one losing eighteen marks to ratio and proportion, even though the two scripts show the same total.

Where method gaps usually sit

The largest single cluster of method gaps usually appears in multi-step word problems — those combining two or three operations, where the child must work out the order themselves. These are precisely the questions visual methods handle well. Drawing the relationships before calculating turns a problem that felt impenetrable into one with an obvious next step, and it is the core of how we approach our 11+ maths tuition programme.

When mock results are misleading

Three situations regularly produce a score that should not be taken at face value.

The first mock. A first sitting measures unfamiliarity as much as ability. Children who have never worked under timed conditions in an unfamiliar room routinely underperform by a considerable margin, and then recover most of it by the second attempt.

An unfamiliar format. A child prepared for one exam board’s style sitting another’s will drop marks to the format rather than the mathematics. Check the format matches your target schools before reading anything into the score.

Turning mock results into a working plan

A mock has done its job when it produces a short, specific list. Three topics to revisit, one timing habit to change, and a date for the next sitting is a better outcome than any score.

Sequence matters here. Close the knowledge gaps first, since they are fastest, then move to method work, which takes longer and rewards patience. Timing is best addressed last, once the underlying methods are secure — practising speed on shaky methods simply produces faster mistakes.

Making the next mock count

Read the paper, sort the errors, pick three things, and sit another one in six to eight weeks. That cycle, repeated three or four times across the exam year, is what moves a standardised score — not the score itself, and certainly not comparing it with anyone else’s.
