The pace naturally needs to increase, but it should still leave room for understanding to develop, rather than becoming pure repetition.

A weekly lesson — whether in a small group or 1-to-1 — should carry the bulk of new learning: introducing a topic, working through it visually, and building the understanding a child will need to apply independently. This is where carefully sequenced teaching does the heavy lifting, rather than asking a child to work it out alone from a workbook.
Two to Three Short Practice Sessions
Outside of the lesson, short, focused sessions of 20–30 minutes, two or three times a week, are far more effective than a single long weekend session. Reviewing homework from the previous lesson, working through a small number of word problems, or revisiting a topic that needs reinforcing all fit comfortably into this rhythm without overwhelming a Year 5 child who still has a full school week and other interests to balance.
One Lighter Review Session
Building in a shorter, lower-pressure session — revisiting a topic from a few weeks earlier rather than introducing anything new — helps consolidate learning and catches any gaps before they grow. Half-term holidays, by contrast, are a good opportunity to add an extra review session or work through a slightly longer set of mixed-topic questions, since the usual school-week time pressure eases.
What matters most across the year is consistency rather than perfection in any single week. A timetable a family can actually sustain from September through to the exam will always outperform an ambitious schedule that collapses under its own intensity by half-term.
