Families returning to the UK after several years abroad tend to arrive with the same question: how far behind — or ahead — is my child? The honest answer is that the maths curriculum gap after moving back to the UK is rarely about ability. It is about sequencing. Two children can have covered the same mathematics to the same standard and still arrive in a British classroom out of step with each other, because the order in which topics were taught was different.

That distinction matters, because a sequencing gap closes quickly once it is identified. A genuine gap in understanding takes longer. Most repatriating families are dealing with the first and worrying about the second.

Where the differences actually appear

British curriculum schools abroad follow the national curriculum, but interpretation varies considerably between schools and regions. The most common points of divergence are consistent enough to be worth naming.

Topic sequencing within a year group

A school in the UAE may introduce formal algebra a term earlier than a school in the UK, and cover statistics a term later. Over a single year this evens out. Arriving mid-year, it produces a child who has met material their new class has not, while missing something the class covered in the autumn term.

Mental methods and written methods

UK primary schools place considerable weight on specific written methods — the formal column methods for multiplication and division in particular. Children taught a different but equally valid method abroad often calculate accurately and still lose marks for presentation. This is one of the fastest gaps to close, and one of the most demoralising if it is misread as a lack of ability.

Problem-solving and reasoning emphasis

The 2014 national curriculum reforms strengthened the UK’s focus on reasoning and multi-step problem solving. Where a child has come from a more procedurally weighted programme, the mathematics itself is familiar but the question format is not. They can do the calculation; they have less practice working out which calculation the question is asking for.

The two transition points that need most attention

Timing shapes how much support a return actually requires.

Returning into Years 5 or 6 puts a child into the most content-dense phase of primary maths, often alongside SATs preparation or, for some families, 11+ entry. Here the sequencing gap has the least room to resolve itself and is worth addressing directly.

Returning into Years 9 to 11 means arriving mid-way through GCSE content, where specification coverage becomes the practical issue. Different exam boards order topics differently, and a child moving between them can genuinely miss a unit. Establishing which board the new school follows, and mapping what has and has not been covered against it, is the single most useful thing a family can do in the first fortnight.

Diagnosing the gap properly

A single assessment paper will not tell you much, because it cannot distinguish between a topic never taught and a topic taught and forgotten. Those two results look identical on a script and require entirely different responses.

The more reliable approach is to work through a small number of topics in conversation with the child. Ask them to explain a method rather than perform it. A child who has genuinely met a topic can usually reconstruct the reasoning even when the procedure has faded. A child who has never met it cannot, and will say so.

Visual methods are particularly useful here, because they make the reasoning visible rather than assuming it. Drawing the structure of a problem shows immediately whether a child understands the relationships involved or is reaching for a half-remembered rule. What a sensible first term looks like

Resist the temptation to run a full catch-up programme from day one. Most repatriating children need three things, in this order.

  • A topic map. What the new school has covered this year, and what your child has covered. The overlap is usually larger than expected.
  • Presentation alignment. Bringing written methods into line with what is expected in the new classroom. This is a matter of weeks, not terms.
  • Reasoning practice. Multi-step worded questions, worked slowly. This is the longest piece and the one that genuinely repays the time.

Settling in matters too. A child adjusting to a new school, a new country and a new set of expectations has a finite amount of attention available, and spending all of it on maths is counterproductive.

Bridging into secondary

Families returning at the end of primary face an additional step, because the move into Year 7 involves its own change of pace regardless of where the child has come from.
