For families based in Singapore whose children are preparing for entry into the UK school system, the 11+ examination presents a particular kind of challenge. The UK curriculum and the Singapore curriculum overlap in many important ways — but they are not identical, and the specific demands of 11+ papers require targeted preparation. Singapore expat 11 plus preparation for the UK curriculum is something we are well placed to help with, drawing on deep knowledge of both educational traditions.

Why Singapore-Based Families Are Well Positioned for the 11+

Children educated through the Singapore system arrive with genuinely strong mathematical foundations. The Concrete–Pictorial–Abstract approach, the emphasis on deep understanding over memorisation, and the focus on problem-solving are all characteristics of Singapore Maths — and they align closely with what UK 11+ papers, particularly in maths, actually reward.

A child who has been taught to visualise problems using bar models and to think through multi-step reasoning is exactly the kind of child who performs well on GL and CSSE 11+ papers. In many respects, a Singapore education is an asset, not a gap.

What the UK 11+ Actually Demands

The 11+ examination varies by region and school type. The two most widely used formats in the UK are:

GL Assessment

Used by grammar schools across many regions including Kent, Buckinghamshire, and parts of London. The maths paper tests number, calculation, fractions, ratio, shape, and data — areas where Singapore-educated children typically have strong coverage. There is also an English paper and, in some areas, a verbal and non-verbal reasoning paper.

CSSE (Essex)

The Consortium of Selective Schools in Essex runs its own exam. We have particular expertise with the CSSE format, including an archive of past-paper solutions and worked video breakdowns. Students from abroad preparing for Essex grammars like KEGS (King Edward VI Grammar, Chelmsford) or CRGS (Colchester Royal Grammar School) benefit from this specialist resource.

The Gaps to Watch Out For

Even strong Singapore-curriculum students should prepare for a few areas where UK 11+ papers have their own emphasis:

  • UK-style word problems. The phrasing and register of questions on UK papers can differ from what Singapore students are used to. Exposure to real past papers is essential.
  • Speed under exam conditions. UK 11+ maths papers are timed. Children accustomed to a deeper, more deliberate pace need practice working accurately under time pressure.
  • Non-verbal reasoning. Many UK 11+ formats include non-verbal reasoning (NVR) — a paper that tests pattern recognition and spatial logic. This is largely absent from the Singapore curriculum and requires dedicated practice.
  • Data interpretation. Some UK papers include data-handling and statistical interpretation questions in a form that differs from Singapore textbook treatment.

How We Support Singapore Expat Families Remotely

All our tuition is delivered online via Zoom with an interactive shared whiteboard. This makes the timezone consideration for Singapore-based families entirely manageable — many of our international students attend early evening sessions (UK time), which align well with morning slots in Singapore.

Every child in our small groups has their own individual whiteboard that their tutor can see and annotate in real time. Our tutors see every piece of working from every student as they write it — an oversight that is, in practice, better than many physical classrooms can offer. Our online tuition for families abroad page explains our approach in more detail.

Our groups are small — typically around four to five students, with a maximum of eight. For families who prefer a more tailored approach, 1-to-1 and 2-to-1 sessions are available at every stage.

When to Start Preparing

For children sitting the 11+ in Year 6, meaningful preparation ideally begins in Year 4 or Year 5. This gives time to cover the curriculum thoroughly, address any gaps, and build the exam confidence that comes from repeated practice rather than last-minute cramming.

For Singapore expat families planning to return to the UK, starting preparation while still abroad is both practical and effective. The online format means there is no need to wait until you are back in the country to begin.

Our students have won places at schools including Westminster, St Paul’s, Harrow, James Allen’s Girls’ School (JAGS), North London Collegiate (NLCS), and across the Essex grammar network — including KEGS Chelmsford and Colchester Royal Grammar (CRGS). For a sense of what structured 11+ preparation looks like, it is also worth reading our post on grammar school entrance exam maths preparation. You can also browse worked examples and problem walkthroughs on the Singapore Maths Academy YouTube channel.

Our founder’s wider work in maths education includes the Bar Model Company, which provides teacher training and resources in Singapore Maths pedagogy — the same foundations that underpin how we prepare children for the 11+.

A Note on the Singapore Connection

Our founder was trained personally in Singapore by Dr Yeap Ban Har, the world’s leading expert in Singapore Maths, and went on to become a consultant and trainer for Maths No Problem — the programme that introduced Singapore Maths to the UK. The connection between what Singapore-educated children already know and what UK 11+ papers reward is something we understand at a deep level, not just in theory.
