OVERVIEW

How the test is structured

Wallington High School for Girls participates in the Sutton SET consortium at Stage One, sharing an identical multiple-choice Maths and English paper with all six Sutton grammar schools, sat in September. Girls who clear the qualifying threshold are invited to the NWSSEE (Nonsuch and Wallington Girls’ School Second Stage Entrance Examination), which WHSG shares exclusively with Nonsuch High School. The NWSSEE Maths paper is a standard written, open-answer test lasting approximately 45 minutes; the English paper is an extended one-hour writing task. No multiple choice appears at Stage Two.

Registration for the SET opens in May and closes in August. Girls must also submit the LA Common Application Form (CAF) by 31 October. WHSG admits approximately 120 girls into Year 7. The school draws from a 6.7 km priority radius, but girls from outside this area are eligible to sit and apply.

HISTORY & ETHOS

The school's story

Wallington High School for Girls was established in 1888 and relocated to its present Woodcote Road site in 1965. For over 130 years it has served as a selective grammar for girls across Sutton and the surrounding boroughs, maintaining its identity through decades of educational change. The school operates within a 6.7 km priority radius that spans Wallington, Carshalton, Cheam, and into parts of Croydon and Merton, reflecting its role as a community anchor for families across a wide south London catchment.Girls at WHSG are characterised by academic breadth alongside strong mathematical aptitude. The school’s culture rewards girls who can apply knowledge across contexts—precisely the disposition that Singapore mastery builds. The CPA framework trains girls to visualise problems before jumping to procedure, which gives them a distinct advantage in the extended, open-answer format of the NWSSEE maths paper and in the mathematical reasoning they will continue to develop throughout their time at the school.

Why the maths is genuinely hard

Sharing Stage Two with Nonsuch, WHSG girls face the NWSSEE—an hour-long extended writing task alongside open-answer maths. The girls who do best combine strong mathematical reasoning with the ability to produce sustained, well-structured written work under examination conditions.

SMA DIFFICULTY VERDICT

Our honest take on the difficulty

The SMA Verdict

3.5

/5

Advanced

Wallington Girls and Nonsuch share the same Stage Two paper, so their effective difficulty is identical at the filtering stage. The NWSSEE maths section is more demanding than a typical KS2 paper but slightly less algebraically advanced than Tiffin Girls’ Stage Two—it sits in the upper-middle tier of the London girls’ grammar landscape. The extended English writing task adds a significant second filter. Girls need mathematical confidence and genuine writing stamina to clear both. Within the Sutton consortium, this is the hardest girls’ selection route.

FAQ

Parents' most common questions

Does Wallington Girls share its exam with other schools?

Yes. Stage One (the SET) is shared across all six Sutton grammar schools. Stage Two is the NWSSEE, shared exclusively with Nonsuch High School for Girls. The boys' Stage Two is a completely different paper.

What is the priority catchment area?

WHSG prioritises girls living within a 6.7 km radius of the school entrance for up to 110 places. Girls outside this area may still apply and are ranked by Stage Two score if places remain after the priority pool is filled.

How does the NWSSEE differ from the SET Stage One?

Stage One (SET) is multiple-choice maths and English. The NWSSEE at Stage Two is entirely open-answer: a 45-minute written maths paper and a one-hour extended English writing task. Both require a very different style of preparation from Stage One.

Is Wallington Girls as selective as Nonsuch?

They share the same Stage Two paper, so selectivity at the exam level is identical. Differences in final offers arise from application volumes and priority area rules at each school.

How early should preparation begin for the NWSSEE maths?

The NWSSEE maths requires written working and multi-step reasoning. We recommend at least 18 months of structured preparation, beginning in Year 4 or early Year 5, to build the conceptual depth and exam stamina the paper demands.
