How the test is structured

Wallington County Grammar School (WCGS) participates in the Sutton Selective Eligibility Test (SET) consortium. Stage One, sat in September, consists of two multiple-choice papers—Maths and English—each lasting approximately 45 minutes. Boys who clear the qualifying threshold are invited to a bespoke Stage Two in early October, shared with Sutton Grammar School and Wilson’s School. The Stage Two Maths paper is written and open-answer; the English component is an extended writing task. No commercial GL or CEM papers are used at either stage.

Registration opens in May each year and closes in August. The LA Common Application Form must be submitted by 31 October. WCGS admits approximately 150 boys per Year 7. Distance is used only as a tie-breaker when candidates achieve identical Stage Two scores; there is effectively no fixed catchment requirement.

HISTORY & ETHOS

The school's story

Wallington County Grammar School opened on 19 September 1927—famously on the 33rd birthday of its founding headmaster, W.T. Hutchins—with just 71 pupils in a single-storey building with a wooden extension. The school moved to its permanent Croydon Road site in 1935. During the Second World War the building was struck by a V-2 rocket: all windows were blown out and the roof collapsed, yet the school kept functioning. Fifty-two old boys lost their lives in the conflict. The school was briefly known as Wallington High School for Boys between 1968 and 1992 before reverting to its historic name. It converted to academy status and has continued as one of South London’s highest-performing boys’ selective schools.WCGS has produced notable alumni including archaeologist John Marco Allegro and composer John Cameron, who wrote the original Top of the Pops theme. The school rewards intellectual rigour across subjects, and its maths culture expects boys to explain their reasoning—precisely the habit that Singapore-method tuition builds from the outset. Bar modelling and CPA progression translate directly into the written-method clarity WCGS examiners reward at Stage Two.

WCGS Stage Two demands written mathematical reasoning, not multiple-choice pattern-matching. Boys must articulate clear working across multi-step problems. The extended English writing task in Stage Two adds a second high-stakes filter that purely maths-focused preparation misses.

Does WCGS use the same exam as other Sutton grammar schools?

Stage One (the SET) is identical across all six Sutton grammars. WCGS then uses a Stage Two shared with Sutton Grammar and Wilson's School. The Stage Two for girls' schools (Nonsuch and Wallington Girls) is entirely separate.

Is there a catchment area for WCGS?

There is no defined catchment area. Boys from anywhere may apply and sit the SET. Distance is used only as a tie-breaker if two boys achieve identical Stage Two scores, so a strong score matters far more than proximity.
