How the test is structured
Wallington County Grammar School (WCGS) participates in the Sutton Selective Eligibility Test (SET) consortium. Stage One, sat in September, consists of two multiple-choice papers—Maths and English—each lasting approximately 45 minutes. Boys who clear the qualifying threshold are invited to a bespoke Stage Two in early October, shared with Sutton Grammar School and Wilson’s School. The Stage Two Maths paper is written and open-answer; the English component is an extended writing task. No commercial GL or CEM papers are used at either stage.
Registration opens in May each year and closes in August. The LA Common Application Form must be submitted by 31 October. WCGS admits approximately 150 boys per Year 7. Distance is used only as a tie-breaker when candidates achieve identical Stage Two scores; there is effectively no fixed catchment requirement.
The school's story
Why the maths is genuinely hard
WCGS Stage Two demands written mathematical reasoning, not multiple-choice pattern-matching. Boys must articulate clear working across multi-step problems. The extended English writing task in Stage Two adds a second high-stakes filter that purely maths-focused preparation misses.

Expert
WCGS sits at the same difficulty tier as Sutton Grammar and Wilson’s within the Sutton consortium—sharing an identical Stage Two, all three schools rank boys on the same paper. The SET Stage One rewards breadth and speed; Stage Two rewards depth and articulation. For maths specifically, the open-answer format means examiners can distinguish genuine understanding from memorised methods. WCGS is consistently among the most selective boys’ grammars south of the Thames, and boys need to be genuinely strong on both axes to secure a place.
