Tiffin School

Tiffin School is one of a handful of grammar schools where the 11+ is genuinely two-stage, bespoke and fiercely competitive. In South West London, nothing else comes close. Singapore Maths Academy prepares boys to clear both stages — not just one.

OVERVIEW

How the test is structured

Tiffin's 11+ is a two-stage process, run with Kingston's local authority and Quest Assessment, with a fresh bespoke test each year. Stage 1 (early autumn) is English and Maths, both multiple-choice and computer-marked — speed and accuracy both matter. There is no Verbal or Non-Verbal Reasoning: Maths and English only.

Stage 2 (around six weeks later, for invited boys) is written-answer Maths and English marked by Tiffin's own teachers, reaching well beyond standard KS2 — speed/distance/time, algebra and simultaneous equations among them. The final Maths mark weights Stage 1 and Stage 2 in a 2:3 ratio, so Stage 2 carries more — but you cannot reach it without a clean Stage 1.

HISTORY & ETHOS

The school's story

Tiffin's origins trace to 1638, when Thomas Tiffin left £50 in trust to educate ‘some honest poor man's son’, his brother John adding £100. The modern Boys' School opened in Kingston in 1880, moved to its Queen Elizabeth Road site in 1929, became a grammar under the 1944 Act, an academy in 2011, and opened its Sixth Form to girls in 2019.What hasn't changed is the competition: roughly 1,300 boys chase about 140 places, among the most oversubscribed state schools in England. In our view Tiffin is the premier 11+ challenge in South West London — not because the questions are impossibly exotic, but because the two-stage format demands consistent excellence across two very different modes over six weeks. Boys who scrape through on technique alone tend to struggle at Stage 2; boys who genuinely understand mathematics tend to thrive. That distinction is exactly what Singapore Maths Academy is built on.

Why the maths is genuinely hard

Tiffin's two-stage structure is demanding in a way single-paper tests aren't: boys must perform cold in an unfamiliar multiple-choice environment first, under real selection pressure, then return weeks later for a harder written paper. The Stage 2 maths reaches well beyond standard KS2.

SMA DIFFICULTY VERDICT

Our honest take on the difficulty

The SMA Verdict

4.5

/5

Master

Tiffin sits in a unique position. It isn't the hardest paper on raw question difficulty — that, in our view, remains Manchester Grammar — but it is one of the most demanding processes, requiring sustained performance across two very different exam styles.

Stage 1 punishes boys who rely on written working; multiple-choice maths rewards rapid mental calculation and confident estimation. Stage 2 demands the opposite: slow, methodical written reasoning on harder content. In London and the South East, Tiffin is, in our opinion, the most complete maths challenge at 11+.

FAQ

Parents' most common questions

What's the difference between Stage 1 and Stage 2, and which matters more?

Stage 1 is a multiple-choice screen; Stage 2 is written. The final Maths mark is weighted 2:3 in Stage 2's favour — but you can't reach Stage 2 without clearing Stage 1. Both need genuine strength, and we train each explicitly: speed and estimation for Stage 1, methodical written reasoning for Stage 2.

Is there any Verbal or Non-Verbal Reasoning in the Tiffin test?

No — Tiffin tests English and Maths only. Strong mathematicians aren't disadvantaged by unfamiliar reasoning formats, but there's nowhere to hide a weaker Maths score.

How selective is Tiffin?

Roughly 1,300 boys apply for about 140 places — close to one in nine. The Stage 1 qualifying score isn't published in advance. In our experience, boys who succeed are typically performing in the top 10–15% in maths before focused preparation.

My son is strong at maths but not at multiple-choice tests — is that a problem?

Potentially, and we train for it specifically. Multiple-choice maths is its own skill: quick mental estimation, checking against distractors, and time management. We build it into Tiffin preparation deliberately, not as an afterthought.

Can girls apply to Tiffin School at 11+?

No — Tiffin School is a boys' grammar for Years 7–11 (its Sixth Form became co-educational in 2019). Tiffin Girls' School, nearby, runs a comparable two-stage process.
