Haberdashers' Boys' School traces its origins to 1690, when the Worshipful Company of Haberdashers received a Royal Charter to fulfil the legacy of merchant Robert Aske, who left £32,000 to educate twenty poor boys from freemen's families. The original school opened in Hoxton, east London, where it operated for nearly two centuries before relocating to West Hampstead in 1874 as academic ambitions outgrew the founding premises. The defining move came in 1961, when the boys' school transferred to its current 104-acre green-belt site at Elstree, Hertfordshire — one of the most generously proportioned independent school campuses in England. In 2021 Robert Aske's name was removed from the school title following a governance review of historical links to the slave trade.Today Haberdashers' Boys' School is recognised as one of Britain's leading day schools, regularly placing boys at Oxford, Cambridge and top medical schools, with a culture that prizes intellectual curiosity and breadth alongside examination excellence.
