OVERVIEW

How the test is structured

QE Barnet uses two GL Assessment papers — one Maths, one English — each approximately 50 minutes long. The Maths paper covers Key Stage 2 content but is pitched at enhanced difficulty to differentiate at the very top of the ability range. The English paper includes two demanding comprehension passages (one may be poetry or drama) alongside a rigorous SPaG section. Both papers are multiple-choice. Over 3,200 boys typically sit the exam for 180 Year 7 places.

Registration opens in May and closes in early July. The exam takes place across two date options in September. Results are issued on 1 October; only boys scoring 220 or above are eligible for a place, though in recent years the effective threshold has been considerably higher.

HISTORY & ETHOS

The school's story

Queen Elizabeth's School traces its origins to 24 March 1573, when Queen Elizabeth I granted a royal charter for a grammar school at Chipping Barnet. It was established by Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, and other civic governors. The original Tudor Hall was erected in 1577 on Wood Street, near the Church of St John the Baptist. For four and a half centuries the school has educated boys at the same Barnet address, celebrating its 450th anniversary in 2023 and being named The Sunday Times State Secondary School of the Year in 2001, 2007, 2022 and 2026. Notable alumni include Demis Hassabis, co-founder of Google DeepMind, and Robert Rinder. This unbroken lineage of academic rigour — from Elizabethan grammar to modern A-level league tables — mirrors precisely what Singapore's mastery method is built on: genuine conceptual depth over surface coverage. A boy who arrives at QE having been trained to reason rather than merely calculate will find the culture an immediate fit.

Why the maths is genuinely hard

With 3,000-plus boys competing for 180 places and a published minimum of 220 but a real threshold well above that, QE demands near-perfect GL Maths and English scores. The enhanced-difficulty GL papers are specifically calibrated to stretch the highest-attaining candidates.

The SMA Verdict

Master

QE Barnet sits at the pinnacle of London grammar school admissions. Its GL papers look standard on the surface but are deliberately pitched harder than the typical GL exam — the school specifically calibrates question difficulty to separate candidates who score in the top one or two per cent nationally. A combined score of 220 qualifies; the actual offer threshold is meaningfully higher. For a Singapore-trained pupil who has mastered bar modelling and deep problem structure, the Maths paper should be approachable — but the volume and precision demanded under time pressure still separates the very best. Preparation must be thorough, not just competent.

FAQ

Parents' most common questions

How many boys sit the QE Barnet exam each year?

Typically over 3,000 boys register for the two-day September assessment, competing for 180 Year 7 places — a ratio of roughly 17:1.

What is the minimum score needed to receive an offer?

The published qualifying score is 220 (combined Maths and English GL papers). In practice the effective threshold has been significantly higher in recent years, so boys should target as close to a perfect score as possible.

Does QE Barnet have a catchment area?

No. QE selects solely on test score. Boys travel from across North and North-West London, Hertfordshire and beyond — there is no geographic priority.

How does Singapore Maths preparation help for the QE exam?

The GL Maths paper at QE is pitched at enhanced difficulty. Singapore Maths trains boys to visualise problem structure through bar modelling and work methodically under pressure — exactly the skills that separate top scorers on a paper designed to differentiate at the very highest level.

When does registration open for Year 7 entry?

The registration form is available from 1 May each year and must be submitted by early July. The exam itself takes place on one of two dates in September, with results issued on 1 October.
