How the test is structured

CRGS uses the Consortium of Selective Schools in Essex (CSSE) exam, sat in September of Year 6. The test comprises two written papers taken on the same day: a 60-minute Mathematics paper covering KS2 content, and a 60-minute English paper (plus 10 minutes reading time) split between comprehension — testing inference, literary devices and vocabulary across fiction, non-fiction or poetry — and a 20-minute continuous writing task. Each paper is marked out of 60 and carries equal weight. Results are standardised before ranking.

CRGS operates one of the higher qualifying thresholds among CSSE schools, requiring a minimum standardised total of 320 to be considered; in practice, the competitive cutoff has run substantially higher. Places are then allocated in descending score order, with distance used solely as a tie-breaker — there is no catchment priority area, making it genuinely open to boys from across Essex and beyond.

HISTORY & ETHOS

The school's story

Colchester Royal Grammar School traces its origins to at least 1206 — and possibly as early as 1132 — making it one of the oldest schools in England. Henry VIII granted the school its first Royal Charter in 1539, securing revenues for its continuation after the dissolution of the monasteries; Queen Elizabeth I reinforced this with a further charter in 1584, cementing its status and name. For centuries CRGS educated the sons of Colchester and north Essex, producing notable alumni including George Biddell Airy (Astronomer Royal, 1801–1892), costume designer James Acheson, and Oxford president David Clary. The school moved to its current Lexden Road site and has occupied the same grounds ever since, becoming a converter academy whilst retaining its grammar school character.Today CRGS educates around 950 pupils aged 11–18, admitting girls to its sixth form since 1998. It specialises in science and languages, consistently achieving outstanding A-level and GCSE results. The school's eight-century tradition of rigorous academic inquiry maps naturally onto the Singapore mastery method: both reject surface performance in favour of deep structural understanding — the same ethos that has guided the school since medieval masters first set pen to parchment in Colchester.

Unlike GL assessments, which test speed and stamina, CSSE questions demand genuine mathematical reasoning and extended written responses. Which exam does CRGS use, and when is it held?
