Chelmsford County High School for Girls

Chelmsford County High School for Girls opened in May 1907 under its first headmistress, Mabel Vernon-Harcourt, with 76 pupils on roll. The school hostel opened in January 1910 to accommodate girls travelling from further afield — evidence of its regional draw from the very beginning. In June 1916, Winifred Picking became the school's first university graduate, earning a First Class degree in Natural Sciences at Girton College, Cambridge; the Alumnae Society, founded in 1908, now numbers over a thousand members. The school's motto, Vitai lampada ferimus — 'We carry the torch of life' — was adopted in 1923 and remains the school's animating principle. CCHS converted to academy status in 2011 and adopted the FSCE bespoke entrance test in subsequent years to better reflect its own academic priorities rather than consortium norms.Notable alumnae include Dame Margaret Anstee (UN Under-Secretary General, 1987–93), entrepreneur Rachel Elnaugh of Dragons' Den fame, MP Karen Buck and former Keeper of Public Records Sarah Tyacke.
