How the test is structured

The Skinners' School selects via the Kent Test (GL Assessment). The two-paper structure is identical to all Kent grammar schools: Paper 1 (one hour) combines English and Maths in back-to-back 30-minute sections; Paper 2 (one hour) covers Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning. All sections are multiple-choice, machine-marked from a separate answer sheet. A 40-minute writing task runs alongside both papers but does not count towards the scored total. Each paper is standardised to a scale of 69–141, giving a maximum aggregate of 423.

Where the KCC threshold is set at 332, Skinners' minimum is 372 — placing it among the most selective Kent grammar schools. The PAN is 160 Year 7 places: 140 for Inner Area applicants (within a three-mile radius of the school or in named West Kent parishes) and 20 for Outer Area applicants, ranked by score within each band. Applications are submitted via the Common Application Form, due by 31 October.

HISTORY & ETHOS

The school's story

The Skinners' School was founded in September 1887 by the Worshipful Company of Skinners, one of the great City of London livery companies, in response to growing demand for secondary education in Royal Tunbridge Wells. The Skinners had governed Tonbridge School since 1553 and established The Judd School in Tonbridge just one year later in 1888; the two schools share a common origin but have developed distinct identities and friendly rivalry ever since. The site on St John's Road — built in High Brooms brick — opened its doors to 53 boys. It became a voluntary-aided grammar school in 1948 following the Education Act 1944, briefly achieved grant-maintained status in 1992 before returning to voluntary-aided status in 1998, and has held specialist status in Science, Mathematics and Computing since the mid-2000s.Old boys of Skinners' are known as Leopards. Notable alumni include England cricketer Philippe-Henri Edmonds, television presenter Nick Knowles, actor Alec McCowen and space environment physicist Professor Michael Lockwood FRS. The school's long-standing specialism in science and mathematics — reinforced by its formal specialist status — mirrors the disciplinary rigour and deep conceptual understanding at the heart of the Singapore mastery method. Boys who arrive at Skinners' already fluent in bar modelling and structured mathematical reasoning are well placed to thrive in a school that takes those subjects seriously at every level.
