For Chinese families with children studying at UK schools, finding a maths tutor for Chinese students in the right context can be genuinely difficult. The challenge is not usually ability — Chinese students often arrive at British schools with a strong arithmetic foundation and a rigorous attitude to study. The challenge is the particular nature of the UK curriculum: its emphasis on mathematical reasoning, written explanation, and the kind of conceptual problem-solving that may feel unfamiliar compared to the more procedural approaches taught in China.
At Singapore Maths Academy, we work with a number of Chinese students at UK independent schools who need expert support as they navigate the British mathematics curriculum. Our approach — grounded in the Singapore method — sits at a natural intersection between the rigour of East Asian mathematics education and the conceptual emphasis of the UK system.
The Transition to British Mathematics
Many Chinese students entering UK schools at Year 7, Year 9, or Year 12 are technically proficient but less familiar with the expectation that they explain and justify their mathematical reasoning in detail. British GCSE and A-level examiners award significant marks for method — for showing how an answer was reached, not just what the answer is.
This shift in emphasis can feel frustrating for students who are strong mathematicians but are used to working quickly and intuitively. Our teaching helps bridge this gap: we work with students to develop their ability to articulate mathematical thinking clearly, whilst building on the strong procedural skills they already have.
Why the Singapore Approach Works Here
Singapore Maths is already familiar to many East Asian families. The Singapore curriculum has strong international standing, and the methodology — moving from concrete through pictorial to abstract — aligns well with a rigorous, logical approach to mathematics that many Chinese students find natural.
What our teaching adds is the specific context of the British curriculum: the types of questions set at GCSE and A-level, the mark schemes, the written working expected, and the particular concepts that British exams emphasise. Our teachers are qualified professionals, trained in the Singapore approach and deeply familiar with the UK examination system.
13 Plus and Common Entrance
We also work with Chinese students — both those based in China and those already studying in the UK — who are preparing for 13 plus entry to British independent schools, including the ISEB Common Pre-Test and Common Entrance examinations.
Singapore Maths has well-established credibility in China, and the problem-solving skills it develops are exactly what selective British independent schools are looking for. Many of our students in this category have gone on to gain places at schools including Westminster, St Paul’s, Harrow, The Perse, and Manchester Grammar School.
How Our Sessions Work
All sessions take place online, via an interactive whiteboard platform. Our groups are small — typically around four to five students, with a maximum of eight — which means teachers can give each student close attention throughout the session.
Our teachers are qualified professionals trained in UK or Singapore mathematics education. They are experienced in working with students from a range of backgrounds and understand both the strengths that Chinese students typically bring and the specific adaptations the British curriculum requires.
Homework is reviewed as part of each session. Students receive immediate feedback on their thinking, not written comments at the end of the week.
Fitting Around School Commitments
We understand that students at UK independent schools carry significant academic workloads. Our sessions are designed to be focused and efficient — we do not pad out lesson time with unnecessary content. Every session is targeted at the specific areas where a student needs to develop.
For students based in China preparing for UK school entry, we work around time zone differences to find sessions that fit the family’s schedule.
Finding Out More
If you have a child at a UK school who would benefit from expert maths support, or if you are preparing your child for 13 plus or Common Entrance entry to a British independent school, we would be glad to speak with you about how we can help.
