Why A-Level Maths Tuition Matters for Top University Admissions

For students with ambitions to study maths, engineering, physics, economics, or computer science at a top UK university, A-level maths is more than just another subject on the form — it is often the deciding factor. Universities such as Imperial, UCL, Warwick, Bath, and Durham set demanding entry requirements, and admissions tutors look closely at predicted and achieved grades. One grade can close a door.

At Singapore Maths Academy, we offer 1-to-1 A-level maths tuition tailored specifically to ambitious students targeting top UK universities. Our approach is direct, rigorous, and genuinely personalised — every session is built around that student’s current gaps, their exam board, and their university goals.

What Makes Our A-Level Tuition Different

Qualified teachers, not graduate tutors

Every A-level tutor on our team is a qualified teacher — not a recent graduate taking on sessions to earn pocket money. Our lead tutor trained personally in Singapore under Dr Yeap Ban Har, the world’s leading Singapore Maths expert, and spent years as a consultant and international trainer for Maths No Problem — the organisation that introduced Singapore Maths to the UK. That depth of expertise informs how we approach even the most demanding A-level content.

1-to-1 only at A-level

We offer A-level maths exclusively as 1-to-1 tuition. There are no A-level group sessions. That is a deliberate choice: at this level, a student’s gaps, pace, and university target are individual — group work would compromise the precision we need to deliver results. Every session is planned around that particular student’s upcoming assessments, weaker topics, and the specific demands of their exam board (we support AQA, Edexcel, and OCR).

University admissions test preparation

For students preparing for selective university mathematics degrees, admissions tests can be a significant barrier. We have prepared students for the MAT (Mathematics Admissions Test, required for Oxford maths and some joint-honours courses). We approach test preparation the same way we approach everything: methodically, honestly, and focused on the student in front of us.

How Our Online Classroom Works

All sessions take place via Zoom, paired with an interactive online classroom where both tutor and student can see each other’s working in real time. There is no passive screen-sharing — every stroke is visible, every mistake is caught and corrected live. For A-level maths, where a single misconception in differentiation or integration can compound across an entire paper, this level of oversight matters.

Homework is set and reviewed in every session. We do not send generic worksheets — questions are chosen to address the exact areas identified in the previous lesson. For major assessments and mock examinations, we produce detailed written feedback reports so students and parents can see exactly where marks are being lost and gained.

The Results We Are Honest About

We do not publish pass-rate percentages. We find that kind of marketing dishonest — the numbers can be manipulated, and they say nothing about the individual student in front of you. What we will say, honestly: former students have gone on to read mathematics, engineering, physics, and science-related subjects at UK universities. We have taken students on predicted C and D grades and seen them achieve A grades at exam. We have been doing this since 2014.

Singapore Maths Academy supports families through every stage of UK maths education — from 11+ preparation, where our students have won places at schools such as Westminster, St Paul’s, Harrow, The Perse, and Manchester Grammar School (MGS), through to A-level tuition for ambitious students targeting leading UK universities. The same rigour and commitment runs through everything we do.

We look after every student — whether they are targeting a top-five university or simply want to consolidate their understanding and achieve the grade they are capable of. Our job is not to generate impressive-sounding statistics. It is to help each student reach their best.

Who This Is For

Our A-level maths tuition suits students who:

  • Are targeting universities with high maths entry requirements
  • Need support with specific A-level topics — pure maths, mechanics, statistics
  • Are preparing for university admissions tests such as the MAT
  • Want to consolidate AS-level foundations before tackling Year 13 content
  • Have fallen behind on a particular topic and need to catch up efficiently

We work with students from across the UK and internationally — from London, Essex, and the South East to the UAE and mainland Europe.

Commitment and Getting Started

We ask for a minimum commitment of four paid sessions. That is long enough for a genuine assessment of where a student is and a clear plan for where they are going — and it gives the student and family enough experience of our approach to know whether it is the right fit.

You will hear back personally from our team when you get in touch. We do not operate a call centre or pass enquiries down a chain. If you would like to discuss your son or daughter’s A-level maths journey, contact us and we will be in touch directly.
