A-Level Further Maths: Who It’s For and How We Teach It
A-level further maths is one of the most demanding qualifications in the UK school system. It builds directly on A-level maths — extending pure mathematics into complex numbers, matrices, polar coordinates, and further calculus — while adding mechanics, statistics, or decision modules depending on the exam board. For students with ambitions in mathematics, physics, engineering, or computer science at a top UK university, it can be a genuine differentiator. But it requires the right support.
At Singapore Maths Academy, we offer 1-to-1 A-level further maths tuition online. Our teaching is rigorous, individually tailored, and delivered by qualified teachers — not graduate tutors.
What Makes Further Maths Different (and Harder)
Further maths is not simply “more maths”. The pace is faster, the abstraction deeper, and the volume of new content considerably higher than A-level maths alone. Students typically study it alongside full A-level maths, which means two substantial qualifications being covered in the same time most students spend on one. Missed sessions or unaddressed gaps compound quickly.
The topics that students most commonly struggle with — complex numbers, proof by induction, further integration, eigenvalues — are often abstract in a way that standard classroom teaching does not fully address. Our job is to make those ideas genuinely understandable, not just procedurally memorised.
Our Approach
1-to-1 only, always
We offer further maths exclusively as 1-to-1 tuition. There are no group sessions at A-level. That is deliberate: at this level, a student’s gaps, pace, and exam board specifics are individual. We support all major exam boards — AQA, Edexcel, and OCR — and every session is planned around the student’s upcoming topics, assessments, and university aims.
Pedagogical depth from real teaching experience
Our tutors are qualified teachers. Our founder was personally trained in Singapore by Dr Yeap Ban Har — the world’s leading authority on Singapore Maths — and later became a consultant and international trainer for Maths No Problem, the organisation that introduced Singapore Maths to the UK. That foundation in rigorous, conceptually grounded maths education shapes how we approach even the most abstract further maths content.
At A-level and further maths level, our teaching is primarily abstract — building true mathematical fluency, not surface-level technique. Where a visual or diagrammatic representation genuinely aids understanding, we use it. The goal is always deep comprehension, not pattern-matching.
University admissions test preparation
For students targeting selective university mathematics or engineering courses, we have prepared students for the MAT (Mathematics Admissions Test). We approach admissions test preparation with the same methodical, honest rigour we apply to the curriculum: identifying the specific skills being tested, building those skills systematically, and working through real past papers under timed conditions.
How Our Online Classroom Works
All sessions take place via Zoom, alongside an interactive online classroom where every stroke of working is visible to tutor and student in real time. For further maths — where a single error in a proof can unravel an entire solution — this level of oversight is particularly valuable. There is no passive screen-sharing. Mistakes are caught and discussed as they happen.
Homework is reviewed carefully at the start of each session. For major assessments, we produce detailed written feedback reports so students know exactly where marks are being lost and how to address it.
Who We Teach and What We Have Seen
We have been teaching since 2014, and we have supported further maths students from across the UK and internationally. Former students have gone on to read mathematics, engineering, and science-related subjects at UK universities. We do not publish statistics or percentages — we find that kind of marketing dishonest. What we will say is that we care about every student we teach, and that care is reflected in the consistency of our Google reviews, which now number over 90 five-star ratings from parents and students.
Singapore Maths Academy supports families across every stage of UK maths education. At 11+, our students have won places at schools such as Westminster, St Paul’s, Harrow, The Perse, and Manchester Grammar School (MGS); at A-level, the same commitment carries through to students targeting STEM subjects at leading UK universities.
Getting Started
We ask for a minimum commitment of four paid lessons. That is long enough to make a proper assessment of where a student is, identify the priority gaps, and begin meaningful progress. You will hear back personally from our team when you get in touch — no intermediaries, no call centres.
If your son or daughter is studying A-level further maths and would benefit from rigorous, qualified 1-to-1 support, book sessions and we will be in touch directly.
