Food Service Assistant

The Mary Mother of the Church Pastoral Center, located in St. Francis, is the main office for the Archdiocese of Milwaukee. The archdiocese covers 10 counties in Southeast Wisconsin and includes almost 200 parishes and over 100 Catholic schools.

The Food Service Assistant works under the direction of the Executive Chef and Lead Cook. The Food Service Assistant assists in preparing and serving assigned meals to the residents and assists in preparing and serving other meals and menus for special events. The position assist with basic food and service preparation in the kitchen and dining areas, including furniture placement and table settings, clean-up, dish washing, and appliance and equipment cleaning. In addition, this position assists in stocking supplies. At St. Francis de Sales Seminary, during the academic year and on a smaller scale during breaks and summer, approximately 80 residents receive meals.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide Food Preparation and Serve Food
  • Assist with basic food preparation tasks such as chopping vegetables, preparing ingredients, and assembling simple dishes.
  • Play a hands-on role in preparing dishes that are more complex or high-end dishes and ensure that all food leaving the kitchen meets the required standards.
  • Assist in organizing and stocking ingredients, utensils, and other kitchen supplies.
  • Assist in serving food to residents.
  • Ensure that all dishes are cooked to the correct specifications and that the kitchen operates efficiently and effectively.
  • Assist the Chef and Lead Cook in managing the kitchen operation.
  • Contribute new ideas and ensure the consistency and quality of dishes.
  • Responsible for maintaining cleanliness in the kitchen, including washing dishes, cleaning surfaces, and ensuring food safety standards are met.
  • May assist in ordering supplies and ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations.

Requirements:

  • Able to complete basic kitchen tasks such as identifying, chopping, and preparing ingredients using appropriate equipment and utensils.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively on a team.
  • Ability to follow instructions and take direction and to make independent decisions and operate with minimal supervision.
  • Strong positive customer service skills.
  • Fundamental knowledge of kitchen operations to include food grade cleanliness, safety, and time management.
  • Ability to work in a high-energy setting with multiple tasks occurring simultaneously.
  • Ability to safely operate and use commercial kitchen equipment, knives, and other utensils
  • 1-3 years of experience [preparing food for large groups working in a commercial kitchen and serving meals
  • Culinary training and experience preferred.
  • Practicing Catholic in good standing preferred.

Working Environment:

  • Work is primarily in a commercial kitchen using heavy kitchen equipment and tools.
  • Temperature exposure-working in a hot kitchen near ovens, stoves, and cold storage.
  • Extended periods of standing and walking (6-8 hours per shift).
  • Exposure to noise, odors, and temperatures
  • Frequently lift and carry up to 50 pounds (food supplies, equipment) (Physical required at Concentra-employer pays)
  • Regular bending, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and reaching overhead to access supplies.
  • Repetitive motion-chopping and other food preparation, cleaning and equipment operation. Manual dexterity handling kitchen tools and small equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Ability to adhere to a flexible schedule due to the needs of the Seminary.

Compensation and Benefits:

The position is a part-time (no more than 29 hours per week), hourly position working in-person at the St. Francis de Sales Seminary. Employees working 20-29 hours per week on a regular basis are eligible for the following prorated benefits: holiday/holy day pay, sick leave, vacation, and health insurance coverage, provided they pay the premium.
