Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY :

Rooted in Christ, the Peace and Justice Commission advises and collaborates with the Bishop of Arlington in promoting a diocesan commitment to peace, justice, and the dignity of every human person in accordance with the principles of Catholic social teaching. It does this through evangelization, formation, and advocacy.

The Liaison to the Peace and Justice Commission is responsible for advancing the mission, vision, and programs of Catholic Relief Services and the Catholic Campaign for Human Development within the Diocese as well as developing, implementing, and administering programs and activities within the Diocese relating to social justice and Catholic social teaching that are in alignment with the diocesan Strategic Plan.

This position is full-time working on average 30 hours per week. Approximately 5 hours per week is allocated to duties related to Catholic Relief Services and the Catholic Campaign for Human Development. Approximately 25 hours per week is allocated to duties related to social justice and Catholic social teaching.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES :

  • Advance the mission, vision, and programs of Catholic Relief Services (CRS) and the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) within the Diocese.
  • Plan and coordinate programs and activities of CRS and CCHD, including CRS Rice Bowl and the CCHD Second Collection and grant programs.
  • In conjunction with the Episcopal Vicar for Charitable Works, solicit, review, and evaluate local CRS Rice Bowl and CCHD grant applications and make funding recommendations to the Bishop of Arlington.
  • Develop and maintain grant agreements, applications, and other forms for CCHD and CRS diocesan programs.
  • Identify new potential applicants for CCHD and Rice Bowl grants; vet applicants and instruct them on the requirements of Catholic social and moral teaching; monitor grantees for compliance therewith.
  • Implement measures to increase CCHD and Rice Bowl receipts.
  • Support the work of the CRS Virginia Chapter.
  • In consultation with the Episcopal Vicar for Charitable Works, develop, implement, and administer programs and activities within the Diocese relating to social justice and Catholic social teaching.
  • Collaborate with the diocesan Peace and Justice Commission to create and execute an annual plan that integrates the principles of Catholic social teaching into all diocesan activities and aligns Commission activities with the diocesan Strategic Plan.
  • Create materials and resources that support parish social justice and advocacy activities and aid in Catholic social teaching formation and education; work with diocesan offices and parishes by delivering resources, presentations, and events for clergy, staff, and laity.
  • Encourage and facilitate communication and collaboration among parishes.
  • Support diocesan efforts to advocate on social justice issues.
  • Serve as an ex officio member of the Peace and Justice Commission; provide staff support for the Commission.
  • Establish a communications plan; in partnership with the Office of Communications, manage internal and external communications; facilitate the communication efforts of the Commission; direct production of Peace and Justice emails and other communications.
  • Develop and administer office budget; manage office financials.
  • Recruit, train, and supervise office staff and volunteers.

  • Requires good hand-eye coordination, arm, hand, and finger dexterity, including ability to grasp, and visual acuity to use a keyboard, operate equipment and read
  • Frequently required to sit, hear, talk and use repetitive motion of the hands/wrists
  • Occasional evening and/or weekend work required

QUALIFICATIONS :

  • Knowledge/Skills:
  • Practicing Catholic with a commitment to the moral and social teachings of the Church.
  • Strong knowledge of the social doctrine of the Church as expressed in Scripture and in papal, conciliar, and episcopal documents.
  • Commitment to educating and engaging Catholics in the social mission of the Church.
  • Ability to engage and cooperate with a wide variety of people; strong skills in convening and mobilizing people and advancing initiatives.
  • Excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills.
  • Strong planning and organizational skills with detail orientation.
  • Ability to balance different, often unrelated and competing, priorities.
  • Strong management skills with the ability to direct, train, and evaluate the work of others.
  • Basic proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams) or equivalent software.
  • Basic proficiency in the use of common office equipment, including copier and scanner.

  • Education Required: Bachelor’s degree

  • Years and Types of Experience: Minimum five years’ experience in parish, diocesan, or other social justice work within the Church.
