Job Description

A major energy provider is seeking a qualified Engineer, Senior Engineer, or Staff Engineer (Civil/Geotechnical) to join its team at a pumped storage hydroelectric station located in Warm Springs, Virginia . This role is ideal for professionals passionate about infrastructure integrity, dam safety, and geotechnical engineering in a dynamic, high-impact environment.

Position Overview

This role involves leading the geotechnical program at the facility, ensuring the safe and efficient operation of high-pressure tunnels, drainage systems, and civil structures. The successful candidate will provide technical expertise, mentor team members, and support regulatory compliance.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conducting inspections of tunnels, dams, and civil structures
  • Overseeing instrumentation, data collection, and analysis
  • Preparing regulatory reports and reviewing emergency action plans
  • Performing slope stability analyses using manual and software-based methods
  • Developing maintenance and repair strategies
  • Acting as a subject matter expert in geotechnical engineering and dam safety
  • Supporting operations and maintenance teams with engineering guidance

The position will be filled at the Engineer , Senior Engineer , or Staff Engineer level based on qualifications and experience.

Qualifications

Engineer

  • 2+ years of relevant engineering experience
  • Strong foundation in civil/geotechnical engineering principles
  • Familiarity with dam safety and hydrogeology
  • Ability to work independently in rugged outdoor environments
  • Valid driver's license required

Senior Engineer

  • 5+ years of relevant experience
  • Advanced technical and project leadership skills
  • Experience with FERC-regulated dams or similar infrastructure
  • Strong communication and technical writing abilities
  • Proficiency in engineering software and data analysis tools

Staff Engineer

  • 8+ years of relevant experience
  • Recognized expertise in geotechnical engineering and dam safety
  • Proven ability to lead complex projects and mentor others
  • Extensive fieldwork experience and regulatory knowledge
  • Strong leadership and strategic planning capabilities

Education Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Civil Engineering with a focus in Geotechnical, Hydrology/Hydraulics, or Dam Engineering preferred)
  • Engineering Technology degrees are not accepted
  • Preferred: Professional Engineer (PE) license or ability to obtain one via reciprocity in Virginia and other states

Engineering Criteria

Candidates must meet one of the following:

  • Hold a 4-year engineering degree from an ABET-accredited program
  • Hold a degree from a Washington Accord-accredited international institution
  • Hold a non-ABET undergraduate degree plus a postgraduate degree from an ABET-accredited institution in the same discipline
  • Hold a degree in Physics, Chemistry, Math, or Engineering Technology plus a postgraduate engineering degree from an ABET-accredited institution

Working Conditions

  • Exposure to dust, grease, oil, fumes, heat, and noise (up to 25%)
  • Work in confined spaces and outdoors (26-50%)
  • Office-based work (51-75%)
  • Travel up to 25%
  • Must be comfortable working around water, at heights, and in underground tunnels
